Overwash Mangrove Forests:
These are usually isolated islands that are frequently flooded. Almost every kind of mangrove can be found on such an island but Rhizophora types dominate. Presumably these islands once collected so much sediment that earth developed that also fertilizes other types of plants.

 Fringe Mangrove Forests:
These are forests that have formed themselves along a very thin border along a water region.

Riverine Mangrove Forests:
These are well-developed mangrove forests in tropical regions, where sweet water rivers flow into the sea or ocean, (e.g.: Amazonas) These are usually flat land areas that are flooded daily.

Basin Mangrove Forests:
These forests are found in inland deepenings that have grooves that lead to an ocean. Where water exchange of sweet and salt water (brackish water) constantly takes place.

 Mangrove Hammocks:
These forests are very similar to the Basin mangrove forests, the only difference is that there isn¡¯t such a difference in altitude, so that not so dominant kinds of mangroves for instance the White Mangrove or the Grey Mangrove can grow right next to Rhizophora types such as the Red Mangrove

 Dwarf Mangrove Forests:
Mangrove types like the Grey Mangrove, the Red Mangrove, the white mangrove and the Indian Mangrove as well as many other types of mangroves can be found in these kinds of forests. However they are all very short, they can only grow up to a height of 1.5 meters in this low nutrient earth. The trees are often very old but short due to the low content of nitrates in limestone ground as well as the hardly available nutrients : natural bonsai trees
