People should leave schools as it is now because teachers are already overloaded with other jobs to do. It is easy to say that teachers should educate healthy eating habits to students, but from the teachers’ point of view, it is not as simple as it looks. Since students have different nutritional status, and thus need different healthy eating habit, taking care of every single one of them is simply not possible. For example, one elementary school has roughly several hundreds students.If teachers in the school were to educate their students about healthy eating habits, they would have to take many things into consideration. Many students are probably allergic to different kinds of foods. Some of them may have a good nutritional balance, and some may have too much fat in their body. As a healthy eating habit for everyone of them would be different, teachers would have to provide each students with different education. Since it does not seem like a tangible plan, parents should be more responsible for their children and educate them about healthy eating habits.
Also, teachers should concentrate on teaching instead of wasting their time and effort to educate students about healthy eating habits. Academic courses are the most important thing for students because good academic record is the only thing that actually matters when students apply for universities or jobs. When teachers are distracted by other activities such as educating students about healthy eating habits, they cannot provide students with a quality education on academic courses. My mother used to teach at an elementary school. Although she had a great passion for students’ education, she was often overwhelmed by the amount of extra work given. One day, the school requested her plan a campaign to promote healthy eating habits in students. As the campaign received very much attention from parents, she dedicated most of her time and energy on the campaign. Although she could successfully make it through the campaign, her class had the lowest class average for the semester. This clearly shows that teachers should pay attention to their students instead of working on unnecessary things.
scoring based on the many assignments allows teachers to evaluate students better because it can minimize the mistakes for the evaluation. When students are to be evaluated by only one or two exams, there can be some students who receive good grades by luck. Since exams are there to evaluate students' learning, more data for teachers would allow them to be more objective for students. When I was in a college, one midterm and a final exam were the only things that one of the math professors counted. A lot of questions on the exams were multiple choices; therefore, I could guess whenever I did not know the answer to the questions. Although I managed to do well on my midterm exam I was not able to prepare for the final exam properly due to the heavy workload. As a result, I ended up guessing a lot of questions on my final exam. Surprisingly, my final grade on the class was A+ because all the questions I guessed turned out to be right. I knew I did not deserve such a good grade. Had I been evaluated by other means, I would not have been able to receive such a good grade.
In addition, when students know that their final grades will be based only on their exam scores, many students will not focus on their class activities and homework. Classroom activities and homework contribute a lot to students' learning, but this is true only if students pay attention in the classroom and work hard on their homework. Because students would lose their motivation for such necessary work, scores should not be the sum of one or two exam scores. Korean education system is a good example of this. Koreans also have an exam for the college application like SAT and ACT. Difference in the exam is that, unlike SAT or ACT, the exam is offered to students only once a year. Therefore, if students do not perform well on the exam, they would have to study another year to get into good universities. As a result, many Korean high school students put much more emphasis on private lessons to prepare for the exam than lessons provided by the school.
The community should invest its money to build a shopping center because eventually it will contribute to protecting the environment. Having a shopping center nearby, people in the community no longer have to drive around and create carbon dioxide when they go shopping. As the consumption of fossil fuels and the emission of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere would be reduced, building a shopping center would benefit the environment of the community. When I was living in a suburban, people suffered from a frequent traffic jam going to urban areas on every weekend. Since there was hardly a big shopping center in the community, people had to drive a long distance when they wanted to shop at a big shopping center. One day, a department store opened up in the area, and ever since it opened, the frequent traffic jam on weekend reduced by far as people did not have to travel a long distance to go to shopping.
In addition, a shopping center in the community can serve as a form of entertainment for people in the community. Of many activities people like to do in their leisure time, shopping is one of top choices because people can obtain what they need and relieve their stress at the same time. For stress is known to be a major factor that keeps people from being healthy, people should get rid of
it as soon as possible. Having a shopping center nearby means granting the residents an easier access to a way to relieve their stress. My friend John usually went to shopping during exam weeks to relieve his stress. In the beginning, I thought he was making an excuse for not studying. One day, I was done with my exams early, so I decided to accompany him to go to shopping. As soon as we arrived at the Rodeo Streets, I could understand why John had come shopping during the exam weeks. The fascinating view and vibe of the area were enough to refresh my mind and relive stress. From that experience, I started to follow John whenever he went to shopping during the exam weeks.
Flexible mind is the most important thing for leaders because it will help them cope with unpredictable situations. When members are confused and disoriented by unanticipated changes in their plans, leaders should be able to quickly get rid of their old plans and provide alternatives for members to minimize the loss of time and energy. As such ability allows a group to work efficiently; leaders should be equipped with a flexible mind. My experience in a chemistry class clearly exemplifies this. I had to take a laboratory-based chemistry class when I was in my third year at a university. In that class, groups of four students carried out a series of experiments throughout the semester. On the last day of the class, we found out that there was missing data. Because we were to draw a final conclusion based on all the experiments, losing any experimental data would mean a failure in the class. However, the leader of my group, Jack, thought of an idea that was borrowing data from other groups that had similar experimental results with us. As a result, I could successfully pass the class, and I thought I was lucky to have Jack as the leader of my group.
A leader should be open-minded and respect other members’ opinion when making a decision because eventually it can contribute to improving productivity of a group. Although leaders should oversee and manage the overall progression of a project, members are the ones who are specialized in their tasks. Therefore, listening to opinions of other members will not only improve each member’s productivity in his or her tasks but also make a better working environment for everyone. Napoleon’s loss at the Waterloo clearly shows that leaders should pay attention to others’ opinion. Born in Corsica, Napoleon Bonaparte was a French revolutionist who overthrew the kingship of France and allowed its citizens to live by their will. Although Napoleon is acclaimed for his leadership, he is known for his stubbornness. In the battle of Waterloo, his army was already suffering from the cold weather and the lack of food. Many generals insisted that they should retreat, but Napoleon forced the army to fight even at disadvantage. Consequently, the army lost the battle. The loss of the battle was so devastating that France ended up losing the entire war against Soviet Union. Had Napoleon listened to other generals, the result of the war might have been different.
People should be able to take risks for their success because life is never predictable. When people encounter surprises that mess up their plans, they need to take a risk and improvise for hesitation can lead to a loss of opportunity. A carefully made plan means nothing when people cannot live accordingly, so a person who can take risks is more likely to succeed. My friend Jenny, who works at the Wall Streets as an analyst, clearly shows that. According to her, people in the industry pay attention to even the most subtle information that can affect stock prices to become a leading analyst. One day, Jenny happended to hear a rumor about a company's false report on its products. Despite the uncertainty of the information, she took a risk and reported it to her boss. It turned out that the rumor was true, and her early report prevented an enormous loss of the company. At the end of the year, Jenny was selected as one of most distinguished analysts of the year. Had Jenny been not reacting to the rumor seriously, she would not have been able to get to such honorable position.
People who are afraid of taking risks cannot succeed because great opportunities come with high risks. There is an old saying “high risk high return.” This proverb emphasizes the importance of taking risks, and this cannot be truer in the modern society. These days, people have to commit themselves in one thing because there is too much competition among people to capture a good opportunity. Since focusing on one thing always accompanies risks, it is inevitable to take a risk for a success. The Bill Gates is a great example of this. Bill Gates went to Harvard College. However, he was not satisfied with his life at Harvard, but instead he wanted to start a new business in his mind. Although he could have a promising life after graduating Harvard, Bill Gates did not hesitate to leave the school. As a result, Microsoft was established, and Bill Gates became one of the most successful people in the world. If Bill Gates chose to continue his education at Harvard, another person might have taken his place.
