A leader should have strong opinions and do not change his or her mind on these opinion
The role of leaders has always been significant. Good leaders motivate, direct, and empower group members. On the other hand, when a bad leader is elected, the leader leads the whole group into a downturn. Therefore, election of a “good” leader has always been emphasized. This leads people to wonder what is the characteristic of good leaders are. For a long time, it has been considered that good leaders should have strong opinions that do not change frequently. People believed that such leaders can direct members effectively as leaders provide a firm direction for members. However, these days, it is commonly thought that leaders should not be strong. The rationale behind this is that in order to adjust to the rapidly changing world, a leader should be flexible with ideas. Moreover, while discussions between employees and leaders are important, it is difficult to have proper discussions with a stubborn leader.
As the society changes very rapidly, strong leaders are likely to assert outdated opinions. The rate which the society changes is hard to be followed when one does not try to do so. While a stubborn leader with strong opinions refuses to find ways to adapt to the dynamic environment, a flexible leader is capable of following the trend. Moreover, the way and rate at which cultures of different countries shift differ, despite of the globalization. This, however, increased even more demand for a flexible leader than ever before in this globalized society. To take a common example, when I was in high school, I did an investigation on my dad’s company’s marketing strategies in an Ethiopian market. Throughout the process, I realized that the leader of the marketing team was striving to meet the changing culture of the market without fixing one’s opinion to one strategy. Even though he implemented the market penetration strategy, the leader frequently modified the strategy in order to cope with frequent changes. Such flexibility of the leader enabled the company to maintain its market leader position in an Ethiopian market. This elucidates that a flexible leader is capable of following changes in a dynamic environment in the modern days
Moreover, it is difficult to have discussions with teammates if a leader has strong opinions. Discussions are essential; with discussions, people can exchange ideas and make modification. However, when a leader is stubborn, the followers are afraid to refute the leader’s idea. Followers have no choice but to follow regardless of the plausibility of the idea. This takes away opportunities to generate a more sophisticated idea. To be specific, when I was in high school, I joined a volunteering group. The leader of the group was in her senior year. Because she was the oldest in the group, she considered herself to be the smartest and argued that her ideas were the best. The group members were all scared of her. Therefore, even when they did not agree with her, they stayed silent and obeyed to her lead. At the end of the semester, all group members left the group and the group disappeared for good. This was because the group members realized that their ideas were not accepted which resulted in both dissatisfaction of members and ideas of low quality.
A person who plans well and works carefully is more likely to succeed than a person who takes risk
Planning well and working carefully can prevent people from wasting time on meaningless activities (which will lead to success). When people do not plan carefully and have to give up in the process, the activities they have done in the process of taking risk can be considered as “meaningless”. It is better to spend some time (considering) before beginning the process than to give up only after realizing that their goals cannot be achieved. Considering this, people do not need to waste their time on activities that would not even contribute to the success when they plan ahead. For example, my uncle, who is almost 50, used to be a risk taker. Right after graduation, he started to invest all of his time on studying computer without planning because he always wanted to become an expert in computer. However, all the time he invested turned into a waste when he had to face the harsh reality. If he had planned ahead, he would have taken the harsh reality into consideration so that he would have at least made alternative plans. The alternative plans would have saved so much time because he would not have needed to start over on a new work, or he would not have invested too much time on meaningless activities.
By planning well and working carefully, people can be easily employed by the company because companies in the contemporary times prioritize people who are careful with their actions. Workforce is one of the most important components in a company; with a hard-working and careful workforce, the net income of the company is likely to rise as careful planning minimizes the amount of money lost from unexpected fluctuations. To be specific, when the company hires employees, it is more likely to evaluate how careful they are with their work by investigating employees’ resume and portfolio. On the other hand, it is hard to disguise oneself as a careful person. Therefore, it is essential for a person to develop a habit of carefully planning in order to be employed by a company and succeed afterwards.
An art center
An art center can be enjoyed by everyone. An art center is capable of targeting all demographic groups, regardless of age, height, weight, education they received, and so on. This is a huge benefit because it is a way to promote equality within the community. Usually, depending on one’s characteristics, social status is determined and hobbies one enjoys differ. However, the art is not restricted to such conditions. Anyone can enjoy art. Therefore, an art center can be a meeting place of different kinds of people communicating through art. To take a common example, when I was working at a company as an intern, I was struggling because of the strict, hierarchal culture of the company. It was hard to talk to the employers, and even group managers. However, there was an occurrence that I was able to talk freely to them: when we visited an art center. Because we were meant to discuss about an art piece, I was able to break barriers between me and my employer as we share our opinions. If it was not an art center that we visited, I would not have had the opportunity to even talk to employers.
Moreover, an art center is a best place to relieve stress. In the modern days, people are living a busy and hectic life, so they are under a high degree of stress. In fact, people usually get so used to such high degree of stress that they do not even realize that they are stressed out. However, it turns out that most of the notorious diseases all result from stress. An art center can provide a solution to this problem. By visiting an art center, people can feel the sense of freedom. To be more specific, in most of the art pieces, emotions of the artists are imbedded. These art pieces can provide a getaway for people as they can escape from the pressure to hide their emotions and indirectly and directly let out emotions that was deep inside their minds. When people fail to express such feelings, they all result in high degree of stress.
Eating habits
School is the best place for students to learn about eating habits. It is undeniable that students go to school to learn with the help of teachers. Ever since students are young, they respect and follow the advice of teachers as students believe the teachers to be knowledgeable. What teachers say is usually accepted as a common norm. Considering this context, when teachers teach about eating habits at school, students will accept what teachers describe to be a good eating habit as a common sense and follow. To take a common example, when I was in elementary school, the whole class did not enjoy eating vegetables as normal children all do. When we ate lunch all together in the class, vegetables such as carrot and cabbages were always thrown away into the trashcan. Noticing such incidents, our teacher once used a class time to explain the advantages of vegetables and what happens if we do not consume them. From that day, children started to at least try to eat vegetables and the amount of vegetables that are thrown away decreased significantly. This illustrates that school is the best place to teach students about eating habits as they will follow the advice of teachers well.
Moreover, students can implement good eating habits with their classmates in school as classmates can motivate each other. Children tend to imitate what others do. Eating habits would not be an exception. When a student starts eating healthy, this will influence the others, eventually leading the whole class to eat healthy. Furthermore, enduring hardships are always better with friends. Even though some might find eating healthy hard in the beginning, as classmates spend most of the day together, they can help each other. The instance of my brother can be a good example. My brother did not like eating carrots. Even though my mom frequently asked him to eat carrots as they are good for improving eye sights, he always rejected the offer. He did not like even the smell of carrots. However, this all changed when he met a friend in a middle school. When he went to middle school, he met a friend called Max. In contrast to my brother’s eating habit, Max loved eating carrots. When he brought his meal in his lunch box, it was hard to find food without carrots. Believe it or not, this stimulated my brother to try carrot. And from that day, my brother started to eat carrot frequently, and now he enjoys eating carrot with Max. Last year, he even went to a carrot festival. This elucidates that with the help of classmates in school, students are more likely to alter their eating habits.
Discussion
Through discussion, people can exchange ideas. Experiences people have shifts how people think about certain occurrences or topics. Discussion mainly involves people talking about their opinions. Therefore, as each person will have their own opinion which is derived from their own perspective and experiences, when these opinions gather, this enables an effective exchange of ideas. Through exchange, ideas can be combined, and even modified so that they are developed into a more sophisticated idea.
Moreover, students can concentration better in discussion. The degree of concentration may depend on several factors. Among these, the motivation is a factor. Discussion motivates students to concentrate better in class. Through discussion, students feel the sense of responsibility to talk and listen to what others say. To be specific, when students study alone, they easily slack off. These days, due to the development of cellphones, people usually play on their phones even when they are meant to work. However, as discussion has to go on for a certain time period, people have no choice but to concentrate.
Neighborhood
The improvement of neighborhood is directly related to the price of their housing, which is the main interest of people these days. As the quality of the neighborhood increases, the price of housings increases. Housings are considered as the asset of house owners; increase in housings is the increase in the house owner’s asset. In the past, people were interested in earning money as much as people these days do. However, money has become more important in contemporary times because capitalism has been more widespread all over the world. This resulted in high interest towards the improvement of the neighborhood as a way to earn money. For example, when I was young, my parents bought an old apartment. As a child, I could not understand them. They invested so much money on buying such an old apartment that seemed like it would fall apart in a year. However, after a year, the situation was so much different from what I imagined it to be. The apartment went through a reconstruction, not only the apartment itself, but also the neighborhood. The price of the apartment skyrocketed. This way, my parents earned a lot of money. Until now, my parents have considered it as one of the best decision they had made and are still keeping eyes on old apartments that might go through reconstruction.
The improvement of neighborhood is directly related to the quality of education children receive. It is undeniable that interest towards education increased significantly as the society became competitive than ever. For students, the competitive society left them no choice but to focus on their academics; academic courses became the most significant aspect for students because only the good grades can get them into a good university and eventually gain great jobs. In response to such high demand and interest in education, the improvement of neighborhood these days usually incorporate increase the number of academies. To be specific, this causes competition between academies and eventually a provision of a high quality education. Considering these circumstances, people these days are more interested in the improvement of neighborhood as they think it is a way to easily provide a good education to their children.
Interested in politics
Students are too busy to be interested in politics. The society became competitive than ever. For students, the competitive society left them no choice but to focus on their academics; academic courses became the most significant aspects for students because only the good grades can get them into a good university and eventually gain great jobs. Therefore, most of the students these days are suffering from sleep deprivation as they stay up all night only to study. As politics are not usually the part of academic courses, interests in politics are considered as a waste of time. They would rather spend such time sleeping. For example, I was interested in politics when I was in middle school. Reading news was the first thing I did in the morning. However, when I was in high school, I had to submit at least five assignments, including two lab reports just within a week. I did not have any other choice but to stay up all night when I could not finish the work in time ; I could only sleep two hours a day on average. On any spare time, I took a nap regardless of how short it was. It turned out that I did not read any news for the whole four years of high school.
Moreover, the corrupted reality of the government is more revealed than they were in the past which made students to think that their interests in politics were useless. In the past, students used to have hopes that when they are interested in politics, the government will work in response to their demand and interest. However, several reports on multimedia have revealed that in contemporary times, the government is more corrupted than they were thought to be. To be specific, at first, a lot of people disagreed with such reports as they had trust in the government. However, as the number of multimedia unveiling the malicious acts done by the government accumulates the interest and the trust towards the government dropped significantly. These led students to think that even if they stay tuned, their interest cannot do any good to the reform of the country. As a result, a lot of students have determined not to waste their effort and energy.
Express disapproval
Parents pay the teachers, so they should be able to express disapproval to the teachers if they are unsatisfied. In the business context, parents are the consumers and the teachers are the company. In any case, company should meet or at least try to meet the demands of consumers. Similarly, consumers can express dissatisfaction to the company through “consumer service center”. Even though there is no such thing as consumer service center between the teacher and parents, the relationship should be the same with the relationship between the buyer and the producer. To be specific, parents pay the teachers expecting a certain quality of education as a product. However, when the teacher fails to meet the expectation or the demand, the teacher is responsible for improving the quality or for modifying the teaching stratloegy so as to satisfy the parents.
Moreover, parents should be a better guide than the teachers. Ever since their children were born, parents guide and educate the children. This allows parents to know their children way better than the teachers do; it is not teachers who start the education of their children, but it is the parents who are aware of how the children were educated. Therefore, when the parents sense that the education their children do not correspond to the education their children has been receiving, regardless of how smart and experience the teachers are, parents should express disapproval.
Way dresses
In young ages, the way people dress is most influenced by parents. When they are young, people wear what their parents make them wear. Below the ages of three, parents help them wear clothes because they cannot stand by themselves, cannot even move properly. Not only do parents choose clothes for their children, but also parents dress children up. Even after the ages of three, because their independence is not yet fully developed and they are not aware of what they should wear at certain situations, they depend on parents’ advice. To take a common example, I have a cousin who is now five years old. When he was born, my aunt had to dress him up with the clothes she bought at the baby store. The choice was completely on her and it did not reflect any of the baby’s opinion. Even though my cousin has grown up, the situation is not that different. Still, my cousin asks for my aunt’s permission before buying clothes. When my aunt says no, my cousin has no choice but to wear what my aunt likes.
Moreover, what people dress tends to follow the trend. The trend in fashion is established when a lot of people start to wear same style of clothes. The underlying cause of this phenomenon is that people are social animals; they always prefer to be part of a group. By becoming a member of a big group with a same style of clothes, people feel the sense of security that comes from the sense of belonging. This leads them to wear clothes even though the clothes they do not reflect people’s characteristics. To be specific, last summer I visited a department store to buy clothes. In the department shop, there were a lot of different clothes brands. I thought I could choose clothes that fit me the most. However, it turned out that the clothes all had the similar or the same style. I had no choice but to buy the clothes that fit the trend. Disappointed, I went out. However, on the way back home, I saw so many people wearing the same type of clothes as the clothes I bought. There, I realized how people wear depends on the trend in fashion.
SNS ( keep information)
Keeping information can guarantee the security from the invasion of the privacy. The invasion of privacy has caused a lot of problems in the contemporary times. As the technology has developed, the way murders can be done has developed correspondingly. To be specific, when a murderer is knowledgeable with technologies, he can easily enter a person’s account on Social Networking Service and find out where the person is at. However, when a person keeps information to oneself rather than posting on Social Networking Services, it limits ways murderers invade the privacy and commit crimes.
Keeping information to oneself makes one’s life much simpler as one does not have to deal with complicated relationships. Social Network Services allow people to form relationships easily. However, it can only form shallow relationships. The problems with such is that one later on have to deal with the others talking as if they know one well, creating rumors and spreading the sources of scandals. Because one does not know who spread the rumor, one has no choice but to remain silent while others ruin one’s reputation. To illustrate, my friend used to enjoy uploading photos of her daily life on Instagram. Once she uploaded a photo of her and her guy friend traveling in Spain. Because she had many followers, a lot of people could see the post. However, then the rumor that she broke up with ex-boyfriend for the guy friend spread all around the school. She could not do anything, but to wait until people stop talking about the rumors.
Information from the media influence
Media have the power to create stereotype which makes people more susceptible to the information they spread. A stereotype is created when a plausible opinion is shown in various types of media and in the process repetitively, the opinion is generalized as a common norm. People perceive such generalization as an irrefutable truth as it seems like it has been agreed by the majority of the population. Then the stereotype is created. Advertisements promote their products using these stereotypes; because such generalization is already implanted inside people’s mind, people can understand advertisements easily. This enables companies to easily approach and attract consumers when promoting their products.
Moreover, people receive most of the information via media. People have their phones with them all the time. As soon as they go back home from work, they turn on their computers and television. The amount of time that they spend with the media is incomparable to the amount of time they spend with their friends, parents, and sales man. It is undeniable that the longer people spend time together, the more influenced people are by each other. Media are not the exception. Because people spend the most amount of time with media, not with friends or sales man even when they are making an important purchase, people are the most influenced by the media.
Agree : people buy products because other people have them
People buy products in order to fit into the group. People are social animals; they always prefer to be part of a group. By becoming a member of a group of people who bought the same products, people feel the sense of security that comes from the sense of belonging. To be specific, there exists a social problem that happens when people fail to be part of a group: bullying. It has been known that bullying used to happen when some students did not have goods that others had. When majority of the population in a certain community has a certain product, the majority assumes the minorities as an inferior group; the minorities are implicitly considered as a population who were excluded from the main group. In order to escape from such isolation, people tend to buy products even though they do not want the products.
Moreover, the competitive society has made people to buy products that others have. The society has become more competitive than ever before. To survive in such competitive society, people strive to excel others in every aspect, and possessing products is not the exception. It is easy to find people who feel inferior to others when they realize they cannot afford to buy goods that others have. In order to overcome depression, people buy products others have. To take a common example, when I was young, I was not as interested in dolls as normal young girls are. I was sure that I would not be interested in dolls. However, one day, I visited my friend’s house. There, various kinds of dolls were all lined up on my friend’s bed. She was bragging of how her mom bought all the dolls for her. I got jealous, and on the way back home, I begged my mom to buy dolls for me. Back then, it seemed like my life was so much miserable than my friend’s life. Even though my mom eventually bought dolls for me, it was not because I wanted to buy, but I was because I wanted to have what my friend has.
Important to know about what happening
Students can identify their source of interest by knowing what is happening all around the world. The incidents happening in a country are limited. This is because in a country, people are share similar culture that has origins in the history of the country. However, outside a certain country, all over the world, more types of incidents are likely to arise as there are simply people from different cultures. One of the best way students can identify what they are interested in is to experience different situation. By indirectly experiencing new incidents that happen in the other side of the world, students can enjoy the opportunity to identify their interest and eventually decide on what they would want to do in the future. For example, my friend enjoyed reading news. The first thing she did as soon as she opened her eyes was to read news from all around the world. One day, she read about how Swedish pharmaceutical company developed a cure for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome patients. Even though not only was she not aware of AIDS, but also she was not related to AIDS. Just by knowing what happened in a Swedish company, she got interested in AIDS and from then, she started work hard in order to pursue a career in developing a better cure for AIDS patients. Now, she is working as a researcher in a multinational pharmaceutical company.
Knowing what happened around the world, people can prepare better for the unexpected occurrences. There is no guarantee that what happened to others would not happen to others far away. Due to the development of technology, the virtual distance between countries shortened; what took ten hours by flight, now takes only one or two hours. Therefore, what happened far away may happen to people. By knowing what happened, people can take measures beforehand as the prevention. To take a common example, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome first occurred in Hong Kong when a cook in a hotel was infected by a bat. However, because people who came to eat and the cook travelled around the world by flight, SARS was soon spread all around the world. In Korea, even though Hong Kong is far away, the government warned the citizens to wear masks all the time. This prevented the whole country from suffering from the virus; this saved millions of life.
The global warming that has become worse due to the destruction of the environment has been causing serious impacts around the world. Humanity has been destroying the environment for its benefits. People cut down trees and grasses in order to secure lands for agriculture. As a result, carbon dioxide which was meant to be absorbed by the producers, plants accumulates in the Earth’s atmosphere causing the global warming. To be specific, as the amount of carbon dioxide accumulated increases, long light waves that were meant to escape the Earth’s atmosphere were trapped. Light waves were then emitted again to the ground, causing heat. Because of these global warming, the amount of glaciers in the Artic decreased, and oceans all around the world became deeper than it was before. Such phenomenon is disturbing established food chain of the ecosystem. Humans are not exception because humans form a part of the ecosystem as a primary or a secondary consumer; humans consume plants and animals.

Small number of friends
Long lasting friends are the only friends who can give advice. With these friends, people tend to endure hardships in life. In contemporary times, people find it hard to ask for advice to their parents. Even though they might respect their parents and feel close to them, it is hard to neglect the age difference between parents and children; it is hard to receive realistic and practical solutions as the way parents and children think would be different. Therefore, people must go to long lasting friends when they have concerns because the friends will know not only the situation but also personality of the people well; long lasting friends can give a realistic advice. Otherwise, they have to hide their emotions. To take a common example, I have a friend that I always go to when I encounter hardships as she has known me for more than ten years. When I broke up with my ex-boyfriend, I could not talk to my parents. I was afraid that I would upset my parents. So, I called my friend. Thankfully, she answered my call right away and listened to whatever I was crying out about. Even though she did not say much, I was able to get a sense of how much she cared about me. If I did not have her by the time I would have been heartbroken, I can never imagine how I could have gone through such a hard time. This illustrates that with the advice from long-lasting friends, people can endure hard time.
Longer the friends spend time together, closer the relationships are. Close relationship gives people the sense of security as people can always count on their friends. In order to become close to each other, people should build up trust. In fact, building up the trust is not an easy task, especially when they did not spend a lot of time together. Trust between individuals can only be stronger as special memories between them accumulate throughout years. Without the ability to maintain long-lasting relationships, people can never share the sense of security with friends. To be specific, I used to have a group of friends that I got “close” as soon as the semester started. We all went to parties together almost every weekend. However, except for when we hung out, we did not talk even when we were in the same class. It was a weird relationship; although it was fun when I hung out with them, it was hard to ignore the awkwardness when we were all together. It seemed like a waste of time to try getting along well with people who I cannot be comfortable with.
