The professor talks about why plants shed leaves. There are two reasons. The first one is they can prevent any potential damage because as they shed during winter, the plant cells might be destroyed. To prevent this, they do not access water to make leaves fall down. Furthermore, as new leaves should have nutrients, the old is good as dead. Also there are too many leaves to photosynthsise so it is beneficial fro them to get rid of old dying leaves. These are the reasons why the professor talks why plants should shed leaves.
