The professor used the lizard as an example of subsurface locomotion’s benefits.
First benefit of the subsurface locomotion is that the lizards can avoid heat. Since lizards are cold blooded animal, they are endangered when their body temperature get over 39 degree Celsius. Thus, entering the underground allows them to survive in desert, since it provides cool temperature.
Second, subsurface locomotion offers lizards the best condition for hunting. To be specific, as underground amplifies the vibration, lizards are able to detect even small insects by using this. Also, it is a convenient way to hunt the preys because they don’t need to use their sight.
These are the 2 benefits that subsurface locomotion provides to animals.
