Last class I asked you to research some of the popular english author of the 19th century. As you may now know, 19 century england was marked by famous aurthors, such as charles dickins. Before starting our discussion about the authors however, I would first like to discuss the accesibility of novels at the time. Like, you know, how reader s used to gain access to novels. Let's first talk about what it was like to purchase novels during the 19th century. Novels of that time which are now referred to as classics, were extremely expensive. The amount of money required to buy a book was almost equal to a labor's average weekly wages. I'm sure you guys will wondering.
How single novel could be that costly, trust me, I had the same exact question before doing more research. What I found was the high cost of novels was mainly due to what they called 'triple deckers' what this means is that a single book was published in three volumes. For instance, to read a novel by let's say aurthor conan doyle, the author of the series of novels who are well aware of sherlock homes, you have to buy not just one book, but 3 separate books to finish it. This system highly discouraged british readers from purchasing novels. It was so engrained in england that publishers argued that it was not a good place to launch a profitable business selling books. Quite unfortunate for the publishers, wasn't it? One example of this is the famous american novel, mobi dick. Which was sold only a dollar and fifty cents in america. But it was seven dollars and eighty cents when it was published in england. Yet as you well know, these novels still read by millions of people at the time. Considering the burdensome expense required to purchase the novel, how do you think that was possible? Well, that's what we will be looking at today.
One of the mediums that people invented was so called, landing library. Landing libraries were different from today's library. In a people have to pay an annual fee to burrow books, some people found this ridiculous. But considering the money they have to pay to purchase the book, this was still a good deal. By the way, of the many landing libraries, moody's was the largest company at that branches of the most of the english time. The way that cemoody, the owner of the library, ran his bussiness, was that he would buy hundreds of thousands of copies of books at once to satisfy the readers and the publishing companies. Since he purchased a novels of large quantities, publishers did not have to worry about their novels not being sold to the public. Also, it was beneficial for his customers at the same time. Because it became possible for them to read the novels more cheaply. I think moody's idea is brilliant. Not only because of his benefits of the libraries, but also he was smart enough to have the tripled deckers. Think about it, since one novels was published in three volumes, moody made three times as much profit. Because of the huge purchases required to fulfill his bussiness plan, he influenced to the readers obsession. And he was a very conservative man and he had a power to decide a purchase of book to put into his libraries. So the publishers avoided the novels he might be offensive. Funny right? This one library owner basically sad yes or no to the publication of a novel. His power of selection was so great. That he could turn amateur writer to a best selling author. Some people might think this is not fair, you know having the book choice of a thousands of people in his hands. But neither the publishers or the public do anything about the decision. That's how he was influential at that time. Okay, that should be enough about moody's
