Now let's move on to the second method that reader's gain access to read novels. Has anyone here ever heard of serial publication form? Well, for those who don't know what it is, it means that the novels divided into chapters. And each of them was published weekly or montly in a magazine or newspaper, typically in chronological order Like I mentioned earlier, since buying several volume books at once came as a great burden for readers. The serial publication form became an efficient way to ameliorate and financial concerns they had.
um,,, remember how I mentioned that books were lengthy and expensive because they were divided into three separate volumes? Well, this serial publication caused authors of the 19th century to write even longer novels. Anybody know why? No? well, you see the writers got paid by the numbers of episodes that novels were published in.  So they tried to make up extra lines and episodes just because to make more profit. Later when all the chapters were bound for official publication. The book was much longer than the author originally intended. Wait, I degressed a little, didin't i? where was I,¡¦. Oh, that's right. We were talking about how serialization made 19 century readers more accessible to literature, right? Okay, charles dickens and new publishers came up with the new version of the serial publication form. Instead of filling up a magazine or newspaper in a lot of content other than the chapters or the books itself, they simplified it. All the magazines and books had a couple of illustrations and advertisements along with the chapters. Dispite serial publication's contribution to  british readers, it's proponents sometimes faced critism from the public. Since authors were only releasing their books periodically, they needed to rush their readers to buy next installment to increase their profits. To do this, the authors used cliffhangers or suspenseful endings. You know, so the readers want to know what's going to happen and rush out to buy the next episode. A lot of readers at the time hated this system. Not all authors made their profit this way. However, charles dickins, for instance, avoided cliff hangers and used different methods to make his readers coming back. Instead of writing suspenseful endings, his installments would in with a men walking down the street, kind of the the ah.. Cinematic effects in movies. You know, someone just walk into the distance. Because of this more settled endings, dickins was praised by the public. And attracted readers who the over dramatiztion by the authors.
