#1 If students read any writings on their own, they would become more independent in the future. It is common sense that teachers cannot be around their pupils all life long and nag them to read or study. On the other hand, when students start to get interested in reading books or articles from the beginning, they will realize that this would lead to self-development. As a result, knowing the benefits of reading, they would eventually do a self-study by reading, becoming more independent.
#2 It is more beneficial that students do self-reading because students would not do reading assigned by teachers. In general, it is a human tendency of not wanting to do tasks forced by others. Likewise, if teachers coerce students to do reading homework, they would not end up doing it at all.
